What’s That Smell? Irondequoit Residents Report Foul Odors; Investigation Underway

Residents in Irondequoit, N.Y., near Ridge Road and Route 104, have raised concerns about unusually strong and unpleasant odors in the area. Described as a “wicked” scent, the smell has affected neighborhoods around N. Clinton Ave., Seneca Ave., and even near the Walmart on Hudson Ave.

Local business owner Gregory Genrich of the Irondequoit Sports Center experienced a fire department response last week due to complaints about the odors. While firefighters ruled out issues within his facility, they noted the smell seemed to originate from the Eastman Kodak sewage treatment plant, carried eastward by the wind.

Monroe County officials have launched an investigation into the source, inspecting sewer treatment plants and other county facilities. However, these have been ruled out as the cause. Kodak also denied knowledge of any related issues, and additional inquiries have been made to RG&E and the State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Possible explanations include atmospheric pressure changes or increased heater use as winter approaches. Authorities are continuing to investigate, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
