Weight From Moose Meat and Drag from Antlers Caused Plane Crash Killing Rep. Peltola’s Husband

Written by on July 18, 2025

The National Transportation Safety Board concluded that the 2023 plane crash that killed Eugene “Buzzy” Peltola Jr., husband of former U.S. Rep. Mary Peltola, was caused by multiple factors including overloading and aerodynamic drag from moose antlers mounted on the aircraft. The Piper Super Cub was transporting moose meat for hunters in remote western Alaska and exceeded its weight limit. The added drag and imbalance from the antlers, combined with turbulent weather, resulted in the plane’s inability to maintain altitude. Peltola, a licensed commercial pilot, did not use scales to weigh the cargo, nor had he received FAA approval to fly with exterior cargo like antlers. Despite immediate aid from hunters at the scene, Peltola died before he could be evacuated. The report highlights common yet risky flying practices in Alaska’s bush pilot community and the challenges of providing timely emergency care in remote regions.
