WDKX’s Own Gerald McBride Bringing “The Rhythm” Hockey Movie To Rochester

Gerald McBride has been in the radio business for 45 years. He recently added the title filmmaker to his resume. McBride, the host of an R&B syndicated radio show that airs Saturday nights on WDKX, is bringing The Rhythm movie to Rochester beginning this Friday. Set in Detroit, the movie is about an underdog ice hockey team and their coach overcoming obstacles as African-Americans in a predominately White sport. McBride was compelled to write the story after attending a hockey game some 15 years ago and discovering he was the only black person in the arena, on the ice, and in the audience. “I was just amazed at the game and curious why there weren’t any black players on the team at all and none in the stands and I got this idea for a story,” McBride said. The main character played hockey before getting into trouble and going to prison. When he returns home to Detroit, he is required to coach an inner-city hockey team. McBride says the fictional story has ties to historical events and is a movie for the entire family. “One of the important messages of the movie is don’t be afraid, just believe that you can achieve,” he said. The Rhythm debuts in Rochester at Movies 10 on Friday and runs through March 6. McBride will be in town Friday to participate in a Q&A session following the 7:20 p.m. screening of the film.
