The Langston name in Rochester is most commonly associated with WDKX-103.9 FM, the state’s only Black family-owned radio station. By the time she was five years old, Andria B. Langston was helping out at the station her grandfather, Andrew Langston, founded in 1974. Now, she’s celebrating a new milestone. This Thursday, Langston’s first lead role in a feature film premieres on BET+. “Peripheral” is a psychological sci-fi thriller that follows Sasha Warwick as she and her husband Ramone move to a remote Arizona town. “All types of strange things start happening. Sasha has to realize what’s reality and what’s in her head. It will definitely keep you at the edge of your seat,” Langston explains. The self-described theatre nerd spent summers at theatre camps growing up in Rochester. She says that while in college at Temple University, she met the creator of the film, Sulayman Tahir. Langston says they both discovered a passion for film noir, sci-fi, and a general love for filmmaking. “I always said, I never see Black women in these roles or these worlds,” Langston said.
Last summer, the independent film won Best Narrative Feature at the American Black Film Festival. “Peripheral” also premiered in South Africa. Langston says the crowd was talking back to the screen and had many questions after the screening. “They were so involved. That was really fun,” she says. This latest film, she adds, represents what it looks like when you create a path on your own and stop waiting for others to open doors for you — a life lesson she no doubt learned early, watching her family run a successful Black-owned business. She says she served in many roles at the radio station—from production and sales to billing and traffic. “I was the janitor for a while,” she laughs. “And now I do sales.” The actress, producer, and filmmaker also co-owns WDKX with her father, Andre Langston.
