WDKX Thanksgiving Special

The Thanksgiving holiday brought together a Rochester community wanting to serve.

The First Genesis Baptist Church was one of many sites volunteers came together to feed others. Boxes of stuffing, potatoes, turkeys, and more were bagged and taken to an estimated 350 people this Thanksgiving. Outreach organizations and members of the Divine Nine were there to help including Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren.

“I am thankful for my family of course but thankful for this community. We have a very loving and giving community that always shows compassion and I`m thankful we have a community like that and thankful for the citizens of Rochester,” Mayor Warren.

On North Clinton Avenue, another scene of giving happened inside Sobrino`s restaurant. The Spanish restaurant opened their doors so people who were hungry could eat for free. WDKX and Sobrino`s partnered up to serve people who needed a meal before the big holiday.

“There`s always people coming in here seeing if we have extra food to give the.  I see them once in a while on the corner asking for food so why not give back the day before Thanksgiving, said Sobrino`s Co-Owner, Ramon Martinez.

“It`s all about giving back to the community and we are a part of the community so it all works hand and hand. I like that because I want to help out and I always to help out for people who are less fortunate or don’t have,“ said WDKX On Air Personality DJ Wizz.

The call to serve was answered again by Rochester`s very own. Thanks to the hard work of Khadija Yawn and David “D Will” Williams, an estimated 1,000 people got a chance to eat a hot meal at the Gratitude and Unity Thanksgiving Community Dinner.

“I had a young lady come up to me and say I don’t even know how I was going to feed my family,” said Khadija.

The dinner was held at the Armory and served pounds of food thanks to donations from the community. For families that could not make the dinner Khadijah and D-Will delivered 150 food baskets to them.

It was more about coming together and loving on one another and showing someone that may not have a family member in sight that we have your back don’t give up,” said Khadijah.

“When Rochester comes together on one accord magic happens,” said D-Will.

The pair donated all of the leftovers from the Thanksgiving dinner to three homeless shelters in the city.
