Walmart recalls frozen shrimp over potential radioactive contamination

Written by on August 20, 2025

Walmart has issued a recall for select lots of its Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp after the FDA detected low levels of Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in shrimp imported from Indonesia. Though the contamination was below federal intervention levels, the FDA recommended consumers discard the affected products or return them for a refund. The contaminated shrimp came from supplier BMS Foods and were shipped to ports in Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, and Savannah. Walmart recalled lots 8005540-1, 8005538-1, and 8005539-1 with best-by dates of March 15, 2027, sold in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia. Experts say the health risk is minimal, but prolonged exposure to low-level radiation can still pose long-term concerns. The FDA is continuing its investigation into shipments from the Indonesian supplier and has denied entry to additional containers linked to the issue.
