Vasectomies surge ahead of NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament

With March Madness underway, some basketball fans are finding a creative way to stay glued to the screen: scheduling vasectomies.
Dr. Jacob Gantz of Rochester Regional Health’s Center of Urology says the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament consistently brings a bump in appointments. “It seems to be more common whenever they can spend their time recovering on the couch, watching basketball,” he said.
The outpatient procedure takes just 15–20 minutes and is done under local anesthesia, but recovery still matters. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activity—including sex and exercise—for several days.
But Dr. Gantz cautions that the decision shouldn’t be made just for sports. “Generally, you want to consider a vasectomy a permanent procedure. While they are reversible, the success rates are not 100%.”
He also notes that other major sporting events, like the Masters and World Series, bring similar upticks—so booking early is key.
Bottom line: If you’re ready to commit to the snip, March Madness might just be the perfect time to kick back, heal up, and enjoy the game.
