National Grid has proposed a rate hike that could raise electricity bills by about $25 per month for the average household over the next few years.
The increase would be phased in, starting with a $14.32 hike in the first year.
Supporters like the New York Geothermal Energy Organization back the proposal in hopes it will lead to more use of energy-efficient geothermal heat pumps.
The plan still needs approval from the public service commission, with public hearing dates yet to be announced.
