The 2019- 2020 school year started two weeks ago in New York State. That means your 14 days are up and if your student has not received ALL state mandated immunization shots he/she can and will be kicked out of school.
One high school student made the news in Buffalo when a school admin came into her class and said “By law, we are not allowed to have you here.”
On Wednesday (the 14th day of the Brighton Central School year) I received an email from the school nurse telling me my 6th grader was missing the TDap shot and must get it soon or else she will not be welcome back in class.
It no longer matters if vaccination is against your religion. Right now your only choices are
A) Get the shots
B) Home School
Earlier this year, NYS repealed all religious exceptions for children in school. This move came in response to the measles outbreak downstate.
You: “But I got a doctor’s note”
NYS Schools: “So what!”
Monroe No. 1 BOCES school is currently being sued by parents who say their child’s medical exemption from vaccination is not even good enough to keep him in school.
In my case, we have a couple more weeks to get the missing shot, because my daughter isn’t 11 years old yet. But the nurse was very clear that we must submit proof that all of her shots are up-to-date within two weeks of her 11th birthday or else she will be kicked out of the school she loves.
