Uber Expands Cash Payments to More Cities, Raising Driver Concerns

Written by on September 5, 2025

Uber has expanded its cash payment option to more U.S. cities, including major ones like Los Angeles and Tampa, as well as smaller cities like Laredo, Texas.

This feature allows riders to book through the app and pay their driver in cash at the end of the trip.

Uber says the move aims to accommodate people without access to bank accounts or digital payment methods.

Drivers can opt out of accepting cash rides if they prefer.

While some drivers appreciate the opportunity to serve underbanked customers, others express concerns.

Handling cash adds logistical steps and may pose safety risks.

One driver, Roxie Benesch from San Antonio, noted she had riders pay in cash due to insufficient funds in their bank accounts.
