The United States recorded its lowest-ever global ranking in the 2025 World Happiness Report, coming in at 24th out of 140 countries.
The report measures wellbeing based on citizens’ perceptions of their happiness. This ranking places the U.S. behind countries like Israel, Mexico, Canada, and the UK. Finland topped the list, followed by Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden.
Historically, the U.S. ranked as high as 11th in 2011 and 3rd in 2007.
The report indicated that the U.S. ranked 12th in social support, 16th in generosity, and a troubling 115th in freedom.
Additionally, happiness inequality in the U.S. declined significantly from 2023 to 2024. Despite the U.S.’s low ranking, the report noted an overall global trend toward greater happiness.
