Monique Mendes is the first Black Female Graduate of U of R’s Neuroscience Ph.D. program.

Mendes started her undergraduate work at University of Florida, majoring in biology and then worked her way up to Rochester to study neuroscience at U of R and finished in five years.

During an interview with Spectrum Local News, she said:

“I didn’t know I was the first Black woman, but I’m excited,” said Mendes. “I feel empowered; I really want other students in the Rochester city schools, just around Rochester that are Black, who are people of color that know that this is possible and that they can pursue a Ph.D. in neuroscience.”

Mendes says that she is heading to Stanford University where she will continue her studies and take part in their post doctorate program.
