Section Five baseball celebrated a historic milestone as two Rochester natives were picked in the top four rounds of the MLB Draft for the first time. Greece Athena graduate Casey Saucke was selected by the Chicago White Sox as the 107th overall pick in the fourth round. Saucke, who was named the Gatorade New York State Baseball High School Player of the Year in 2021, has spent the last three seasons at Virginia, earning second team All-ACC honors as an outfielder. He joins fellow Rochester native Danny Mendick in the White Sox organization.
Penfield graduate Gage Ziehl was selected 12 picks later, going 119th overall to the New York Yankees. This marks Ziehl’s second time being drafted, as he previously chose not to sign with the Cubs after being picked in the 11th round out of high school in 2021. Ziehl played for the University of Miami, where he spent the last two seasons as a starting pitcher and was ranked as a top 100 prospect by MLB Pipeline.
