TSA to End Shoe Removal Requirement at Airport Security
Written by Site Hub on July 7, 2025
After nearly two decades, the TSA may soon stop requiring travelers to remove their shoes at U.S. airport security checkpoints. The change, first reported by Gate Access and confirmed in an internal TSA memo, will allow passengers to keep their shoes on during standard screenings beginning July 14 at select airports, expanding nationwide soon after. The rule, imposed after the 2001 “shoe bomber” incident, has long been a point of frustration for travelers. While TSA PreCheck members have already been exempt, this update would apply to all travelers aged 12 to 75. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is expected to officially announce the change. While the TSA hasn’t publicly confirmed the shift, it has stated it’s always exploring ways to improve security and the passenger experience.
