Trump Administration Announces Funding Cuts to NEH and IMLS, Prompting Lawsuit from 20 States

Written by on April 7, 2025

On Monday, the Trump Administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced plans to cut funding for the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS), which provide financial support for museums and libraries nationwide.

At the Livingston County Historical Society, Museum Administrator Anna Kowalchuk expressed frustration over losing two promised grants from IMLS totaling $200,000.

These funds were intended for a building project to expand artifact storage and purchase equipment for preserving various items.

Other local institutions, such as the Rochester Museum and Science Center and the George Eastman Museum, may also be affected by these cuts.

In response to the funding reductions, Attorneys General from 20 states, including New York, have filed a lawsuit challenging the decision.
