Thousands of Costco Workers Prepare to Strike as Contract Deadline Looms

Written by on February 2, 2025

Thousands of Costco workers are preparing to strike at midnight if a new three-year contract is not reached, with negotiations between Costco and the Teamsters union still ongoing. The Teamsters represent 18,000 Costco employees across six states, including California, Washington, and New York.

Union members argue that Costco’s profits have soared, with $7.36 billion in net income last year—double its 2019 profits—yet workers have not seen commensurate wage increases. Teamsters President Sean O’Brien warned that if the company does not agree to a fair contract, workers will walk out nationwide.

Costco, which employs 219,000 workers in the U.S., stated that its agreement with the Teamsters applies to less than 10% of stores. The company insists it has a strong relationship with the union and is negotiating in good faith.

If a strike moves forward, it could impact operations at key Costco locations, though it remains unclear if stores will fully shut down.
