The Mirage casino in Las Vegas is closing

The Mirage hotel-casino in Las Vegas will close on July 17, marking the end of an era for the iconic property credited with transforming Las Vegas into an ultra-luxury resort destination. Developed by Steve Wynn, the Mirage opened in 1989 as the Strip’s first megaresort with a Polynesian theme, sparking a building boom. Known for its volcano fountain and attractions like Siegfried and Roy’s white tiger shows and Cirque du Soleil’s Beatles-themed act, the Mirage will undergo major renovations and reopen in 2027 as Hard Rock Las Vegas, featuring a 700-foot guitar-shaped hotel tower. The closure will result in over 3,000 employees being laid off, with $80 million in severance payouts. The Culinary Workers Union, representing many Mirage employees, has secured $2,000 per year of service for laid-off workers and options for re-employment upon reopening. The Mirage’s closure follows the Tropicana Las Vegas’s recent shutdown to make way for a new baseball stadium.
