A local healthcare organization, Common Ground Health, is calling attention to the impacts of structural racism and inequity on the state of healthcare for communities of color. Specifically, their new report, titled “The Color of Health” focuses on the toll of racism on Black lives in the greater Rochester area. According to Common Ground CEO Wade Norwood, he reported that the number of positive COVID-19 tests was 43% higher in Black individuals, compared to those who are White, hospitalization rates were 236 times higher, and mortality rates were 83% higher.
Norwood stated; “To improve health for Black residents, we need to address what happens in classrooms, on the way to school, on the job, and in the home. Health equity must focus beyond the four walls of the medical clinic, and The Color of Health is a report that does just that.”
