The Cause of the Creek Fire has been deemed Undetermined

Written by on July 17, 2021

Last year, the largest single fire to occur in California’s recorded history, was deemed undetermined by the US Forest Service on Friday.

The fire, called the Creek Fire, burned 379,000 acres and destroyed 850 structures last year.

CNN stated:

“Lightning is the most probable cause of the wildfire, but authorities aren’t ruling out arson or ‘smoking activities,’ fire investigators said in a news release. The undetermined status is ‘not uncommon given the complexities involved,’ officials said in a news release.”

Dean Gould, forest supervisor of the Sierra National Forest, gave more background on the investigation and stated:

“We all want to know a definitive cause to what started the devastating Creek Fire last year. Investigators spent countless hours hiking rugged terrain to determine the cause, interviewed numerous leads, and eliminated multiple potential causes. In the end, lightning remains as the probable cause.”
