Local advocates and businesses have come together to shine a light on an unsung hero who helped an older woman after she was knocked down during a fight at the Lilac Festival. Devionte Terrell is that good Samaritan.

He says he just finished buying himself a drink when the fight broke out. He heard the commotion, and then the woman’s yelling from the middle. After seeing people looking at her without stepping in, he chose to do the right thing. “It’s more than like the right thing, especially if you believe in God. You don’t really do it for awards, but if you’re a God-person, that’s just built in you. He kind of speaks and takes action through people, so that’s just what it was, I can’t really explain it, that’s just who I am,” said Terrell.

That’s why Evangela “Van” Stanley, the owner of People’s Choice Kitchen, decided to honor Terrell by bringing together small-business owners to thank him. “What’s going on in the community today it really has to stop. It’s sad, it sickens me,” she said, “how there’s no regard for human life.” Terrell says another young man intervened as well. They are trying to find him so they can honor him in the same way.

RPD says there were a few isolated fights at Highland Park, which were handled by security and the special event detail. One person was arrested, and no injuries were reported.
