Written by on September 23, 2024

SZA took to social media to express concern over the resurgence of nitrous oxide—commonly known as “whippets”—and a product called “Galaxy Gas” that she believes is being aggressively marketed to Black youth. Posting on X, she questioned why the government isn’t intervening, highlighting that the product has appeared suddenly and is being sold openly in stores. SZA pointed out the childlike branding with stars and bright colors, suggesting it is intentionally designed to entice children. She also shared information about the potential neurological and psychiatric side effects of nitrous oxide.

After her comments circulated widely and were picked up by The Shade Room, some critics noted that whippets have existed for years. SZA responded by emphasizing that while the substance isn’t new, Galaxy Gas was founded in 2021 in Atlanta and is now being marketed directly to children, even being sold at retailers like Walmart and gas stations. She urged people to “HELP THESE KIDS” and called the situation abnormal. Additionally, rapper Lil Gnar has joined in criticizing the product, releasing a viral video where he discards a Galaxy Gas canister to discourage its use.
