Super Mario 64 Breaks Records: First Video Game To Sell For More Than $1 Million

Written by on July 15, 2021

The iconic Super Mario 64 has just sold for $1.56 million, according to Heritage Auctions in Dallas, by an anonymous bidder. This 1996 Nintendo classic sold just two days after the 1987 Legend of Zelda game that sold for $870,000, breaking a record for the highest-selling video game that had just been set. This record has been a shock to most, but it even surprised the auction house’s video games specialist, Valarie McLeckie. McLeckie spoke with NPR, stating; “I was … a bit blindsided, I have to say…Mario has become such a cornerstone in our collective global culture. He’s basically the Mickey Mouse of video games.”
