As the 4th of July approaches, Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, is preparing for the holiday, with the Adult Emergency Department fully staffed for both July 4th and 5th. Dr. Aekta Miglani, Medical Director of the Adult Emergency Department, notes that the hospital’s urgent care centers will be open from 9 AM to 5 PM on July 4th, with the emergency department operating 24/7.
Dr. Miglani highlights that the holiday often brings significant and life-changing injuries related to fireworks. She advises that any fireworks containing substantial explosives, beyond simple sparklers or poppers, pose a higher risk of causing explosions and injuries.
Over her 10 years of experience, Dr. Miglani has observed that most firework-related injuries occur among males aged late teens to early 40s, often involving alcohol. Injuries typically happen when there is no barrier between the person lighting the firework and the firework itself, when fireworks don’t go off as expected, or when their timing is off.
The hospital’s emergency department collaborates closely with the trauma division, especially during the 4th of July holiday, to manage the increased number of firework-related injuries.
