Applications are now open for the New York State Police entrance exam, part of a $66 million initiative announced by Gov. Kathy Hochul to increase the number of troopers and enhance public safety, particularly in tracking illegal guns. The recruitment drive includes more training academy classes, with testing starting on August 15. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, aged 20-34 (up to 41 with military experience), and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. The exam application fee is $20, and the test can be taken at Pearson VUE centers for an additional $44.
To join the State Police Academy, candidates need 30-60 college credits and must be New York residents, aged 21-35 (up to 42 with military experience), with a valid New York driver’s license. Physical fitness, hearing, and vision tests are mandatory, along with the ability to work rotating shifts. Visible tattoos and piercings are largely restricted. Starting salaries are $59,612, rising to $98,300 after one year, including full health and retirement benefits.
State Police Superintendent Steven James emphasizes the importance of diversity and community representation, with the force committed to the 30×30 pledge to increase female recruits by 30% by 2030.
