St. Paul Boulevard Fire District Proposes $21.8M Bond for New Firehouse

The St. Paul Boulevard Fire District is seeking voter approval for a $21.8 million bond to construct a new firehouse, citing health and operational shortcomings in the current 40-year-old facility. Fire Chief Kenneth Stavlone explained that the building lacks private showers, decontamination areas, and gender-inclusive spaces—posing risks to firefighter health. If approved, the bond would increase taxes by about $62 annually for average homeowners. While officials stress the project’s necessity, residents raised concerns about limited notice and the timing of the December 30 vote. Stavlone promised improved outreach and transparency going forward.
