Spike Lee, Queen Latifah, and Missy Elliott Among National Medals of Arts Recipients

President Joe Biden awarded the 2022 and 2023 National Medals of Arts to 20 notable artists, including Missy Elliott (artist and producer), Queen Latifah (artist and actress), Spike Lee (filmmaker), and Carrie Mae Weems (visual artist), during a private White House ceremony on Monday, October 21, 2024. These artists are recognized for their significant contributions to the arts and culture in the U.S. Missy Elliott, a trailblazing rapper and producer, and Queen Latifah, an award-winning actress and musician, will join acclaimed filmmaker Spike Lee and celebrated visual artist Carrie Mae Weems in receiving this prestigious honor. LaVar Burton and 19 others will be honored with National Humanities Medals at the same ceremony. The awards are the highest given by the federal government in the arts and highlight the creative impact, dedication, and lasting influence of the artists in their respective fields.
