South Korea experienced its deadliest aviation disaster in decades and the world’s deadliest plane crash of 2024 when a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 crashed at Muan International Airport on December 28, killing 179 people. The crash occurred after an initial failed landing attempt, with the plane overshooting the runway, hitting a concrete fence, and bursting into flames. Only two crew members survived.

This tragedy is one of several fatal aviation accidents in 2024, marking a challenging year for global aviation safety. Earlier incidents included a January collision in Tokyo that killed five, a July crash in Nepal that claimed 18 lives, and an August turboprop accident in Brazil that killed 62. Most recently, an Azerbaijan Airlines crash in Kazakhstan on December 25 resulted in 39 deaths.

Investigations are ongoing, but the year’s repeated accidents have raised concerns about aviation safety and operational challenges. The Jeju Air crash, in particular, has sparked scrutiny of Boeing aircraft, further impacting the manufacturer’s reputation. This tragic series of events underscores the need for heightened vigilance in aviation safety worldwide.
