South Carolina Man to Be Executed by Firing Squad, First in 15 Years

On Friday at 6 p.m., Brad Sigmon, 67, is set to be executed by firing squad, marking the first U.S. execution by this method since 2010. Sigmon, convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend’s parents with a baseball bat, chose this method over the electric chair or lethal injection, citing concerns over pain and secrecy surrounding drug protocols.
During the execution at South Carolina’s death chamber, Sigmon will be strapped into a chair, a target placed over his heart, and a hood placed over his head. Three trained volunteers will fire .308-caliber bullets, designed to shatter on impact, aiming for instant death.
The state turned to the firing squad after struggling to obtain lethal injection drugs. Sigmon’s lawyers have appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court and Governor Henry McMaster for clemency, arguing that he is a model prisoner suffering from mental illness. If the appeals fail, South Carolina plans to continue executions every five weeks, with two more inmates awaiting their fate.
