Some Rochester area schools giving back days after quiet winter
Written by Site Hub on May 5, 2024
After a mild winter with fewer snow days, some school districts in the Rochester area are giving back the unused days by granting additional days off or ending the school year earlier. Brighton students received an extra day off during the April 8 eclipse, and Gates-Chili announced an extra day off on May 23, creating an extended Memorial Day weekend. Greece schools have moved up the last day for Pre-k through 8th grade to June 21 from June 25. New York State Education Department allows districts some flexibility in managing their schedules, as long as they meet the required number of instructional hours and days. Districts can use up to four superintendent conference days for staff development or parent-teacher conferences, which count towards the instructional minimums. With school calendars potentially changing during the last two months of school, a newly added state-mandated holidays like Juneteenth and Lunar New Year, and a two-week winter break in the 2024-25 school year due to Christmas falling on a Wednesday, parents are advised to stay up-to-date with district communications and plan accordingly for childcare.
