Social Security, VA Move to Electronic Payments Only

The U.S. government is phasing out paper checks for most federal benefit payments starting Tuesday, aiming to reduce fraud and save money.

Most recipients already get electronic payments, but those still using checks can switch via GoDirect.gov or by calling 800-967-6857.

Some may still qualify for paper checks due to age, disability, or lack of access.

Advocates warn the change may be hard on vulnerable groups, and the Treasury urges caution against scams.
