The New York Court of Appeals in Rochester will hear arguments Tuesday as social media companies seek to dismiss a wrongful death lawsuit tied to the 2022 mass shooting at a Buffalo Tops supermarket. Filed by the victims’ families, the suit claims that social media platforms played a role in the attack by promoting White supremacist conspiracy theories that influenced gunman Payton Gendron. The lawsuit alleges that platform algorithms exposed Gendron to increasingly racist, antisemitic, and violent content, which attorneys argue helped him plan and carry out the deadly shooting that killed 10 Black people.
