SNAP recipients can receive additional aid from Rochester’s Abundance Food Co-Op

Many Rochester residents who receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program already had difficulty stretching money every month for groceries prior to the current crisis. As the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic continues, food scarcity and higher grocery store prices across the nation have started to make it even more difficult for SNAP/EBT cardholders to acquire healthy, nutritious food.
Abundance Food Co-Op in Rochester has joined forces with Field & Fork Network to bring a program to the area called Double Up Food Bucks that’s funded by the United States Department of Agriculture. With this program, SNAP recipients can gain access to even more food within tight budgets. Each recipient will receive $1 for $1 in matching funds (up to $10 per day) when they buy whole fresh produce (fruits and vegetables) at the Abundance Food Co-Op located at 571 South Avenue.
As Chris Pepe, the Co-Op’s General Manager, explained: “We believe we are offering something that Rochester area SNAP users could really benefit from. Finding ways to make our local dollars stay in the community, while helping to feed families, and supporting local farmers, is what the Co-Op is all about.”
SNAP/EBT cardholders don’t have to be Co-Op members to participate in this program. They can sign up for the new program at the Co-Op during normal business hours. Cardholders can also find out more information by calling (585) 454-2667.
