Severe Weather Devastates U.S., Killing at Least 39 People

Written by on March 17, 2025

A massive storm system swept across the central and eastern U.S. over the weekend, leaving at least 39 people dead and causing destruction through tornadoes, wildfires, dust storms, and extreme winds. The storm spawned nearly 90 tornadoes, with the hardest-hit areas including Mississippi, Missouri, Alabama, and Texas. In Mississippi, two tornadoes tore through Walthall County within an hour, killing six people and displacing over 200 residents. Missouri also reported at least 12 fatalities, with homes reduced to rubble.

In Oklahoma and Texas, wind-driven wildfires destroyed hundreds of homes, prompting warnings of further fire risks this week. High winds also fueled deadly dust storms, leading to an eight-car pileup in Kansas that killed eight people.

As recovery efforts begin, National Guard troops have been deployed, and President Donald Trump assured federal assistance. Another storm system is expected midweek, bringing more snow, wind, and fire weather risks to the Plains and Midwest. The devastation highlights the increasing intensity of extreme weather events across the U.S.
