Severe Drought Prompts Burn Ban Across New York

Written by on October 1, 2025

Most of Monroe County and surrounding regions are now under “severe drought” conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. In response, Governor Kathy Hochul issued a statewide burn ban effective October 2–15, prohibiting brush burning, debris disposal, and uncontained fires. Contained fire pits and small cooking fires remain allowed. The Department of Environmental Conservation reported fire danger levels as “high” and said rangers have battled 64 wildland fires since August. The state is urging residents to conserve water through measures like fixing leaks, reducing lawn watering, and shorter showers. Officials will reassess the ban before its expiration.
