Serena Williams has joined the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo, the WNBA’s first Canadian franchise, set to debut in 2026. She will partner with Larry Tanenbaum, Chairman of Kilmer Sports Ventures, in shaping the team’s future.
“This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the value and potential of female athletes,” Williams said in the team’s announcement Monday.
Williams will have an active role in the team’s branding, including jersey designs, and adds to a growing list of former athletes investing in the WNBA, joining Magic Johnson, Tom Brady, Dwyane Wade, and Renee Montgomery.
Toronto Tempo President Teresa Resch praised Williams, calling her “the greatest athlete of all time”, and emphasizing her commitment to empowering women in sports.
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, has previous ownership experience with Angel City FC (NWSL) and minority stakes in the Miami Dolphins and TGL’s Los Angeles Golf Club. Her husband, Alexis Ohanian, has also been a major investor in women’s sports.
