Seneca Park Zoo welcoming two new giraffes

Written by on October 12, 2024

Seneca Park Zoo is welcoming two new Masai giraffes, a one-year-old male named Elliot and a three-year-old female named Kura, who were transferred from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This move is part of the Species Survival Plan Breeding recommendation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), aimed at managing species across AZA-accredited institutions. The new giraffes will join the existing giraffes Iggy, JD, and Olmsted at the zoo, while the female giraffe Pippi has been transferred to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. As Kura and Elliot acclimate to their new environment, the Animals of the Savanna barn will be closed periodically for observation. Masai giraffes are endangered due to poaching and habitat loss, and Seneca Park Zoo participates in the AZA Giraffe SAFE program, which works to protect them.
