Seneca Park Zoo Euthanizes Newborn Giraffe Calf Due to Paralysis

Written by on June 17, 2025

Seneca Park Zoo announced the euthanization of a newborn giraffe calf after discovering its left rear leg was paralyzed and it was underweight. The calf was born to four-year-old giraffe Kura on Tuesday, but never stood after birth, a critical milestone for giraffes. Veterinarian Dr. Chris McKinney confirmed the injury was neurological and untreatable. Kura had been under observation since her transfer to the zoo last year. Despite monitoring and care, complications during birth likely led to the fatal condition, leaving zoo staff and visitors saddened.
