New York State Senator Rob Ortt is advocating for increased police powers to assist federal immigration enforcement, including in sanctuary cities like Rochester.
He plans to present his proposal at the Rochester Police Locust Club Union headquarters.
The issue gained attention following a video showing Rochester police officers collaborating with Border Patrol and Homeland Security during a traffic stop, which the police chief stated violates city policy.
Currently, Rochester police cannot assist with immigration investigations, as the city has been a sanctuary since 1986, and local law enforcement policies prohibit arresting or questioning individuals based solely on suspicions of illegal residency.
