Halloween is a week away, but according to a new date added to the National Calendar, little ghosts and goblins should prepare for trick or treating this weekend.

Saturday, October 26, 2019 is the first ever National Day of Trick or Treat.

This comes after an online petition called for Halloween to be moved from its traditional date of October 31 to the last Saturday in October.

According to the organizers, moving Halloween to a Saturday would allow children to safely celebrate the holiday over the weekend rather than during potential school days.

The idea was met with a lot of opposition and the Halloween & Costume Association scrapped their original idea and launched their all-inclusive #ALLoween campaign.

The revised petition supports the all-day celebration of National Day of Trick or Treat AND the time-honored traditions of Halloween on October 31st.

After gaining more than 150,000 signatures online, a National Day of Trick or Treat was added to the National Calendar.

WDKX’s own Jazzy T spoke to Aneisha McMillan, Marketing Maven for the Halloween & Costume Association, to find out what’s next for the campaign.

“The ultimate goal is to continue acquiring signatures and the support of the 200 million Americans we are expecting to see celebrate Halloween this year,” McMillian said.

“We’re not certain what ‘critical mass’ will look like but we are hopeful that the government takes notice and realizes what a huge celebration this is turning into. We are thrilled that we are able to expand the celebration to include an additional day of parties, parades, block parties, zombie walks, trunk or treats and yes, Americans now have the option of day-time trick or treating!”

But be careful before you start knocking on stranger’s doors this Saturday. Not everyone got the message about the first National Day of Trick or Treat and the porch light may not be an invitation for you to solicit candy.

The #ALLoween organizers have put together a Community Blueprint to help everyone plan and celebrate the new holiday safely.
