Hip-hop pioneer Roxanne Shanté is set to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, making history as the first solo female rapper to earn the prestigious honor.
On January 28, the Queens native, 55, was announced as part of this year’s Lifetime Achievement class, alongside Dr. Bobby Jones, the late Prince, and Frankie Beverly. The award will be presented at the Special Merit Awards Ceremony on February 1, just one day before the 2025 Grammy Awards.
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, praised the recipients, stating, “Each of this year’s Special Merit Award recipients has left an indelible mark on music, from paving the way for others to innovation that forever has changed the trajectory of the musical landscape.”
Shanté, known for her battle rap origins at age 14 and her legendary track Roxanne’s Revenge, appeared on CBS Mornings to discuss her journey, including her transition away from the music industry. “I was never making money,” she admitted. “You can’t miss what you don’t have.”
Her recognition comes at a pivotal time for hip-hop history, giving a long-overdue honor to one of the genre’s most influential female pioneers.
