Rochester’s Year-Round Composting Draws Thousands of Participants
Written by Site Hub on September 15, 2025
Rochester’s citywide composting program has grown to include over 2,300 active participants who have diverted 145 tons of food waste from landfills so far in 2025. The program, which operates through all seasons, was launched four years ago as part of the city’s Climate Action Plan, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainability. Resident Jaclyn Moll, a frequent user of the program, regularly brings in heavy loads of food waste and praises the convenience and community support. According to Karen St. Aubin, the city’s Director of Operations, composting significantly reduces what ends up in the waste stream. The initiative currently features three drop-off locations, with plans to add a fourth later this year. Participation is free, but limited to Rochester city residents.
