Aqua Porter, who has dedicated her post-retirement years to fighting systemic poverty in Greater Rochester, has been honored as a Woman of Distinction by the New York State Senate. Porter is executive director of the Rochester Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative. She spent 36 years at Xerox as a mechanical engineer before joining RMAPI in 2020. Sen. Samra Brouk (D-Rochester) nominated Porter for the honor. “An exceptional visionary and leader, Aqua continues to move mountains and make tremendous impact as the executive director of RMAPI with her unwavering commitment to empowering her community,” Brouk said in a news release. ” Porter has been named to the Rochester Business Journal’s Power 100 list every year since its inception in 2021 and was named an ICON Honors recipient in 2024. She is treasurer of the Susan B. Anthony Museum & House Board of Trustees and member of RIT’s Saunders School of Management Advisory Committee. “I am really grateful to be honored as a Woman of Distinction,” Porter said. “It is the achievement recognition of a lifetime. It recognizes how hard I’m working, how hard collectively we’re doing things in this community to alleviate poverty, and to show people that their hard work pays off and that they are recognized for it.”
