Rochester’s Day of Action Calls for Culturally Responsive Education

Written by on July 20, 2025

Community members and scholars from Freedom Scholars Learning Center gathered outside Rochester’s City Hall to hold a Day of Action promoting culturally responsive curricula in public education. Themed “Public Education is Public Good,” the event included youth-led performances, original student poems and songs, and a Gallery Walk featuring student-created artwork envisioning their futures. Older students contributed opinion editorials advocating for inclusive curricula and increased investment in public education. Organizers emphasized the lack of an explicit right to education in the U.S. Constitution and called for persistent public support to ensure equitable schooling. The event highlighted the power of student voice and creativity in shaping policy discourse and emphasized education’s role in fostering civic engagement and social mobility.
