In Rochester, there is growing concern about the impact of the COVID-19 on feelings of isolation and depression in elderly Rochester residents.

The charity Lifespan and local volunteers have taken this matter into their own hands. Rochester volunteers of all ages are reaching out to elderly residents thorough the phone and making connections and friendships that will help elderly people survive COVID-19 isolation.

Volunteers are first screened and then connected with residents who may be feeling lonely during this time. Some elderly residents will receive a few phone calls a week, others will receive multiple phone calls on a daily basis. The charity explains the volume of calls depends on the needs of the elderly caller.

Volunteers are talking, laughing and singing with the elderly they call, ensuring no one feels lonely or helpless during this difficult time. Deb Palumbos of Lifespan said, “We get wonderful stories that come back. Those who receive the call say ‘You’re the only one checking on me. You’re the bright part of my day’.”

As New York tackles the unprecedented situation created by COVID-19, volunteers like the individuals at Lifespan are working hard to ensure elderly people feel heard and cared about during this time.
