Rochester Veterans Find Resources to Overcome Challenges in Starting Small Businesses

Written by on November 11, 2024

Veterans face unique challenges when starting small businesses, especially in securing capital, as many lack the financial history that banks require for loans. Veterans own nearly 2 million small businesses in the U.S., generating $1.3 trillion annually, but ownership has declined in recent years. Despite their military-acquired skills in resilience, leadership, and adaptability, many veterans struggle with financing and transitioning to civilian life.

To support “vetrepreneurs,” numerous resources are available, including veteran-focused loans, grants, and nonprofit organizations like SCORE and Warrior Rising that provide mentorship and financial guidance. For example, Jackson Dalton, a Marine Corps veteran, built a successful safety equipment business by obtaining SBA certification, while John Griveas, a Navy veteran, secured a FedEx grant (which partners with Hello Alice) at a critical moment for his dog treat business, Fetch! Dog Treats. These resources are helping veterans turn their entrepreneurial dreams into sustainable businesses.
