Rochester School No. 3 Renamed
Written by Site Hub on October 3, 2021
This past week, the Rochester City School District has decided to rename School No.3 after Black educator Dr. Alice Holloway Young. Young was a former teacher at School No. 3, which was formally known as Nathanial Rochester Middle School. Young had moved from Virginia to North Carolina at age 4, as her home state did not have a school for Black children and North Carolina did. Now, 94 years later on Dr. Alice Holloway Young’s 98th birthday, Rochester celebrates her story as Young stood outside of the school that now bears her name.
