Yesterday during a press conference, Rochester Mayor-elect Malik Evans held up a jar with 816 beans representing shooting victims over the past three years. When Evans takes office on January 1st, he plans to prioritize this as his number one issue. Evans stated: “I want folks to know that even though I’m not sworn in yet, we are hard at work and trying to tackle the issues so we will be able to turn the switch on day one.”
Evans plans to conduct a national search to replace Interim Chief David Smith, looking for someone who can bridge divides between law enforcement and the community. He stated: “They will be an expert on law enforcement. They will be an expert on the streets. They will have the credibility to go out into the community and talk to people there and the credibility to be able to sit in a room with the U.S. attorney and the district attorney and the police chief and all levels of law enforcement to be able to also be credible and that is going to be absolutely important to be able to coordinate a lot of these programs we want to do long-term.”
