Rochester marks the start of Black Breastfeeding Week

Written by on August 26, 2024

Rochester marked the start of Black Breastfeeding Week with a Sunday celebration organized by the Healthy Baby Network. This national initiative, running through August 31, addresses the disparities Black families face in infant and maternal health, particularly through breastfeeding. Black babies have the lowest breastfeeding rates in the U.S., a situation linked to a painful history and a lack of access to support services. Events like Sunday’s aim to raise awareness and broaden education on the health benefits of breastfeeding. The Healthy Baby Network provides crucial services, including free doulas and support for Black mothers and fathers, to address and reduce these disparities. Executive Director Sherita Bullock emphasized the importance of focusing on these needs to create a healthier community. The organization hopes to expand these efforts in the future.
