Rochester Law Firm Victim of Mail Check Theft and Forgery
Written by Site Hub on December 20, 2025
A $4,000 check from Pheterson & Spatorico Law Group was stolen from a mailbox, altered, and nearly deposited twice—first through a mobile app and then at an ESL ATM. The check, originally written for Perinton taxes, had the payee changed to “Dimesha Brown” but retained the original signature. Rochester police arrested the car’s driver, 21-year-old Emani Gillespie, who now faces grand larceny charges. The suspect in the back seat, who actually attempted the deposit, remains at large. The case underscores a growing check theft issue, often tied to stolen postal keys and resale of checks via the dark web or Telegram. Businesses are now investing in added security amid rising mail theft incidents.
