City leaders in Rochester announced the launch of the ACTION team, a new community responder initiative aimed at handling low-risk 911 calls and alleviating pressure on police.
Set to roll out this fall, the team has been three years in the making and will consist of full-time employees trained in de-escalation and conflict resolution.
Unlike other city teams, the ACTION team will operate independently, responding to non-urgent calls without police involvement. Initially, ten team members will work from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., addressing issues like trespassing and disturbances.
City officials plan to evaluate the team’s performance quarterly and hope to expand its operations to 24/7 service in the future, covering welfare checks and other community concerns.
